Intro

During my undergraduate study, I focused on arts management, cultural project development and audience engagement, exploring how cultural organisations build connections with audiences through programming, communication strategies and public participation. Through academic research and practical projects, I developed an audience-centred approach to cultural practice, with a focus on creating more inclusive and meaningful cultural experiences.

Unpaid Work in the Cultural and Creative Industries

Using Stand-Up Comedy as Example
2021
This essay examines unpaid work in the cultural and creative industries through a review of academic literature. It explores the prevalence and causes of unpaid labour, its impact on career development and industry structures, and the ways creative practitioners navigate precarious working conditions, using the UK stand-up comedy industry as a case study.
The research explores why unpaid work is prevalent in the cultural and creative industries, how social class and financial circumstances shape practitioners’ experiences, and how unpaid labour affects career development, social mobility and workforce diversity. It also examines how stand-up comedians respond to precarious working conditions.
This research combines a literature review with case study analysis, drawing on academic studies of employment conditions, social class and unpaid labour in the cultural and creative industries. It also examines interview-based research involving 64 UK stand-up comedians to analyse the causes and career implications of unpaid work, as well as practitioners’ strategies for navigating precarious working conditions.
The research finds that unpaid work is closely linked to intense competition and precarious employment structures in the creative industries. Practitioners with greater financial resources are better able to undertake unpaid work, while those with fewer resources may lose opportunities to gain experience and build professional networks, reinforcing existing inequalities. In stand-up comedy, performers often sustain their careers by accepting low-paid or unpaid gigs, maintaining relationships with promoters, taking supplementary jobs and undertaking emotional labour. However, these strategies help them adapt to precarious working conditions rather than address the underlying problem of low income.
